Soumitra Chatterjee may undergo tracheostomy, say Kolkata doctors

Soumitra Chatterjee's health condition has remained the same over the weekend, with no major development or deterioration. Sources from Kolkata's Belle Veu Nursing Home said on Sunday that he might have a tracheostomy soon, as reported by Anandabazar Patrika. However, his blood pressure and other blood levels are normal. Soumitra Chatterjee was admitted to the facility on October 6 after he tested positive for the novel coronavirus.

SOUMITRA CHATTERJEE COULD HAVE A TRACHEOSTOMY NEXT WEEK

Doctors said Soumitra Chatterjee may have a tracheostomy early next week. As of now, specialist doctors are being consulted. The team of doctors treating him are currently weighing whether the use of this method could lead to any other unwanted health issues or cause any physical harm. The doctors have confirmed that they have received approval from his family in this regard. If all goes well, he could have a tracheostomy early next week.

Soumitra Chatterjee was also put on dialysis on Sunday.

WHAT IS A TRACHEOSTOMY

Tracheostomy is a method used to deliver more oxygen to the lungs. Here, through a surgical procedure, an incision is made on the anterior aspect of the neck in order to place a tube into a person's windpipe. The tube is inserted through a cut in the neck below the vocal cords. This allows air to enter the lungs. Normally, this may be a temporary or a permanent procedure.

SOUMITRA CHATTERJEE'S HAEMOGLOBIN COUNT IMPROVED ON FRIDAY

While the 85-year-old's health has remained the same in the last three days, on Friday, Soumitra Chatterjee's haemoglobin had improved and his platelets count had reached to more than one lakh-count. However, his renal condition remained a matter of concern. The doctors had contemplated conducting fresh dialysis on him on Friday, which was then carried out on Sunday.It was also reported that Soumitra Chatterjee has no new infections, and therefore, the team of doctors treating him were planning to administer the last dose of antibiotics.

Soumitra Chatterjee had tested positive for the novel coronavirus on October 6 and was admitted to the private hospital in Kolkata. Though he soon tested negative, his health started deteriorating as Covid-19 encephalopathy set in and complications due to comorbidities surfaced.

Soumitra Chatterjee had made his debut in Bangla cinema with Satyajit Ray's Apur Sangsar or The World Of Apu.
