TikTok parent ByteDance working on new music app to challenge Spotify and Apple

TikTok's parent, ByteDance, is seemingly working on a new app to help users discover new music. As per a trademark application with the US Patent and Trademark Office, the app will be called 'TikTok Music', though the exact launch date remains unclear. The application may help the company expand its operations as the primary TikTok app not only promotes short video content but also relies heavily on music. It will also compete against music streaming giants like Spotify, Apple, and Google. ByteDance already offers a music streaming app, dubbed Resso, that still remains available to download in India, despite its sister TikTok being banned in the country for security reasons.
The trademark highlights that TikTok Music by ByteDance will let users "live stream audio and video interactive media programming in the field of entertainment, fashion, sports, and current events". It will offer "downloadable mobile applications providing podcast and radio broadcast content".

If the TikTok Music app is indeed in the works, we can expect to see it include some tools that are already available on Resso. For instance, the Resso app offers a TikTok-like scrolling interface, and it shows recommendations based on users' browsing history - similar to Spotify and YouTube Music. It also lets users view lyrics, download music for offline listening, and search for songs playing in the background, like Shazam. Notably, the app gives easy access to delete users' accounts. However, it is only available in select markets like Brazil and India.

In the Brazil-specific TikTok app, there's also a dedicated button to direct users to Resso.

Once the app formally launches, Resso will likely continue to operate in India under the same name, while the Brazil-centric app could be rebranded. TikTok Music will aim to make a name in key markets like the US and the EU. App tracker Appbrain shows that Resso already has over 100 million downloads globally.

As per ByteDance's expansion plans, we can expect the company to start TikTok Music Originals, similar to Spotify's in-house content. As one would expect, all the songs available on the app will be available to use on the main TikTok app.
