Google Maps rolls out Insights tool to help users keep track of their movement every month

Google Maps is rolling out an Insights tab for its Timeline feature. The new tool will give users a more extensive insight, as the name suggests, into their travelling or movement every month. To get access to the Insights tool, users are required to click on their profile picture in the top right corner and select their timeline from the pop-up menu. The timeline offers options including Day, Trips, Insights, Places, Cities, and World.

According to a report by Android Police, which first reported that the feature, Insights tool is rolling out to users in Germany and the UK. As of now some users in India have spotted the feature on Android, however, there is no word from Google as to when the feature will be rolled out for all users. It collates the movements of people depending on the modes of transport used by people. It also helps users keep track of the places they have visited. Thus the Insights tool is a stats page of sorts that will tell users how much time they have spent in shops, restaurants, and bars. It also notifies users about the busiest day of their month.

Google Maps has also brought about some tweaks to its user interface (UI) like lesser white space between entries. Users can also edit their timeline using the new floating action button. Google Maps also introduced the Trips tab which will be available in the updated version of maps.

Earlier this year, Google Maps was working on a tool that helps users prevent accidents by suggesting not the fastest but the safest route. The navigation app will route users away from roads where drivers are known for braking hard leading to accidents. Google will take help of the sensors which are placed inside users' mobile devices. The accelerometers and gyroscopes can spot areas on the road where there is sudden deceleration pointing to braking, according to a report by Auto Evolution.

Google also introduced Live View, which uses AR to guide users at places like an airport, transit station or even malls. The best part about this feature is it will help users find the nearest elevator or stairs to change the gate or get to the check-in counter. The phone screen will show arrows to help users indoors. Google will also show information about weather and air quality that will now be shown on the Google Maps app in select countries, including India.
