Sony PlayStation 5 lacks important refresh rate feature that will be available later

Sony is giving crucial information about the new PlayStation 5 gaming consoles that might come as a surprise to many buyers. In the FAQ section for the PS5 that Sony recently updated, the company has confirmed that the PlayStation 5 consoles do not feature variable refresh rate at the moment. The variable refresh rate, or VRR, will instead be made available later. This is strange because the HDMI 2.1 ports on the PlayStation 5 consoles come with VRR support and the software optimisations for this should have been added before the consoles went on sale.

For PlayStation 5 buyers in the US and some other regions, this might be a little disappointing, considering the latest Microsoft Xbox Series X and Series S gaming consoles come with VRR, which is available for use right away. The variable refresh rate allows games to transition between different frame rates seamlessly on the fly, making the gameplay smooth. This is important for when there is a sudden drop in the framerate in a game due to internet issues or other causes. VRR makes sure the gaming experience is not ruined while the framerate dips. But Sony’s latest PS5 does not offer that right away.

Sony has not said when it is planning to roll out the update to the PlayStation 5 that will add the ability to manage variable refresh rates. It could roll out the update as soon as next month, or maybe Sony thinks it still has time until Microsoft Xbox Series X becomes widely available to buy. To recall, Microsoft had previously confirmed it is struggling to maintain the stock for its latest top-level gaming console and that this might continue until April 2021.

Sony has not stated if it, too, has the same issue regarding the inventory of the gaming console. But, at the same time, it is not clear about when it will be able to release the PlayStation 5 into the Indian market. The company shared an official statement for the delay in India release a few days back.

The Sony PlayStation 5 can offer a graphic performance of up to 120fps at 1080p and 4K resolutions, which is impressive for the kind of games that require those kinds of requirements. But Sony is taking time to make one of these requirements available to the PlayStation 5 buyers. This would mean that when PS5 users are playing a game and by chance the framerate dips, there will be visible stutters in the gameplay that might hamper the gaming experience. For an equivalent price, Microsoft is offering the VRR feature to its buyers.

The VRR update is set to arrive in the near future, although I am not sure when that will happen. But even when that feature arrives, you might not be able to experience it unless you have a television that supports VRR. VRR will be available via HDMI 2.1 ports on a select range of televisions. Sony has not named any particular television models for experiencing the best gaming on the PlayStation 5 but Microsoft has a recommendation for its Xbox Series X buyers in certain markets.

Recently, Microsoft went into an exclusive agreement with LG to promote Xbox Series X gaming on the latter’s OLED televisions. The LG OLED TVs come with support for VRR via HDMI 2.1 ports. Moreover, these televisions have Dolby Atmos and Dolby Vision features to provide the best audio and visual experience when playing high-grade games.

Sony will need to make things right before its potential customers begin to turn their head towards the Xbox Series X for this one thing, which although seems a little impractical but is a deal-breaker considering the competition. Sony has more exclusive titles than Microsoft for its gaming console and the lack of VRR might be a temporary annoyance for some buyers.
