US sees more than 90,000 Covid-19 cases in 24 hours for 1st time

The United States has reported a record daily spike of coronavirus cases on Thursday as the country registered over 90,000 new infections, according to latest data on the Johns Hopkins University.

According to the data, the country has recorded 91,295 cases in 24 hours which is its worst rise in daily cases. The previous record was 88,973 cases reported on Saturday.

The US has so far reported a Covid-19 tally of 8.94 million since the beginning of the pandemic.

The country also reported 1,021 fatalities due to Covid-19 in the past 24 hours and the total death toll in the country due to the virus has gone up to 2,28,625. It may be noted that the US remains the worst-affected country in the world in terms of deaths and the number of cases.

Local media reports indicate that the virus is currently spreading rapidly in the Midwest part of the country.

Just three days ago, news agency Reuters reported that the number of Covid-19 cases in the United States rose 24 per cent to more than 4,85,000 while the number of tests performed rose 5.5 per cent.

It was also reported that deaths doubled in more than seven states including Connecticut, Idaho, Michigan, Minnesota, New Jersey, Ohio and Wyoming. However, the death count in these states is still lower than Florida, Texas and California.

The Reuters report added that 36 out of 50 states had seen a rise in cases for at least two weeks in a row. The South Dakota region seems to be dealing with higher risk with a positivity rate of 40 per cent, followed by Idaho at 34 per cent and Wyoming at 29 per cent.
