The coronavirus situation continues to worsen in the United States amid the ongoing presidential elections as more than 1 lakh cases were reported in a single day. On Friday, the US reported 1,00,233 fresh Covid-19 cases.
This is the highest single-day figure in any country so far. The previous highest for the US was 91,000 Covid-19 cases that were reported on Thursday.
The US figures on Friday surpassed the 97,894 cases that were reported in India on a single day on September 17.
"Five times over past 10 days, the United States has exceeded its previous single-day record of 77,299 cases registered in July. The number of daily infections reported during past two days indicates that the nation is now reporting more than one new case every second," Reuters said in a report.
The recent spike in Covid-19 cases comes just four days ahead of the 2020 US presidential election on Tuesday.
So far, the Covid-19 pandemic has killed close to 2,30,000 people in the United States alone.
This has also been a hotly debated issue that has dominated the final stretch of the campaign.
The United States crossed 9 million cumulative cases on Friday, representing nearly 3 per cent of the population, according to a Reuters tally of publicly reported data.
On Friday, 16 US states reported their highest one-day coronavirus infections while 13 states were at record levels of hospitalised Covid-19 patients.
As per the Reuters, for every 10,000 people in the US, over 272 coronavirus cases have been reported and about seven people have died. In Europe, there have been 127 cases and four deaths per 10,000 residents
