IPL 2020: Rajasthan Royals enter elite T20 charts with 86 runs in last 5 overs against KXIP

The nail-biter between Rajasthan Royals and Kings XI Punjab on Sunday in IPL 2020 broke several records.

In another cracker in Sharjah, the Rajasthan Royals went on to chase the highest-ever score in IPL history when they scored 226/4 to win their second match of IPL 2020 and go second in the points table.

It was a game that showed things that were thought to be impossible previously. From Nicholas Pooran's brilliant fielding effort on the boundary ropes that has been termed by many cricketers to be the best piece of fielding ever, to Mayank Agarwal hitting the second-fastest IPL hundred by an Indian, off just 45 balls.

When Kings XI Punjab scored a daunting 223/2 in their 20 overs, it already seemed like the result was there for everyone to see.

KL Rahul and Mayank Agarwal had an opening partnership of 183 runs - the highest for Kings XI Punjab and the third-highest overall opening partnership in the tournament.

They were just two short of highest ever opening partnership in the IPL that was set by Jonny Bairstow and David Warner for Sunrisers Hyderabad last season, and one run behind the 184 scored by Chris Lynn and Gautam Gambhir for Kolkata Knight Riders in 2017.

In T20 cricket, nothing seems impossible.

When Rajasthan Royals started their chase, the tried to stick to the required run rate of 11.20, but kept falling behind at regular intervals.

In the middle-overs, it had shot up to 17.

At the 15-over mark, the Rajasthan Royals were 140/2. They still needed 84 off just 30 balls. A seemingly impossible target?

Sanju Samson hit three sixes and got 20 runs off the Glenn Maxwell over, but perished the very next ball.

Rahul Tewatia, who had been struggling at 17 off 23, and looked like a deer in the headlights who had been frozen, then suddenly went ballistic.

He knocked 5 sixes in the next over of Sheldon 'Salute' Cottrell and plundered 30 runs off it. After that, as they say, it is all history. Rajasthan Royals sure did create history on this very Sunday at Sharjah.

In the process, they also ended up scoring the second highest score in the last five overs of a match to win a chase in T20 cricket.

The list is topped by Trinbago Knight Riders - who hit 90 runs in the last five against St.Lucia Stars in a Caribbean Premier League game in 2018.

The 86 runs scored by Rajasthan Royals against the Kings XI Punjab on Sunday is the second highest.

The third-highest score of 84 runs was hit by Sussex against Gloucestershire in a Vitality Blast match in 2015.
