India adds 10 lakh new cases to Covid-19 tally in 12 days, caseload crosses 60-lakh mark

India's overall tally of confirmed Covid-19 cases crossed the 60-lakh mark on Sunday while the total number of recovered patients surged to 50 lakh. This development means India added 10 lakh fresh cases of infection to its caseload in a mere 12 days.

In its Covid-19 bulletin last updated at 8 am on September 27, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) put India's caseload at 59,92,532. This was inclusive of 49,41,627 recovered patients, 9,56,402 active cases and 94,503 virus-related deaths.

Compared to the previous 24 hours, states and UTs collectively reported 1,124 more deaths and another 92,000 recoveries while also recording a decrease of 4,567 in its tally of active cases.

Maharashtra on Sunday detected 18,056 new cases along with 13,565 recoveries. The state now has 2,73,228 active cases.

With 9,543 new cases, Karnataka also reported another 6,533 discharges and 79 more Covid-related deaths on Sunday. There are now 1,04,724 active cases in the state.

Similarly, Kerala added 7,445 fresh cases to its tally along with 3,391 recoveries and 21 more casualties. Kerala now has 56,709 active cases.

The state of Andhra Pradesh also reported 6,923 fresh cases, 45 more deaths and another 7,796 recoveries. With these figures taken into consideration, the state has 64,876 as of September 27.

Delhi reported 3,292 new cases followed by West Bengal with 3,185 new, Madhya Pradesh with 2,310, Gujarat with 1,411 and Jammu and Kashmir 1,141 among others. The Union Territory of Ladakh recorded 10 new cases and another 14 recoveries in the last 24 hours.

At present, India is the second-worst hit nation in terms of the Covid-19 pandemic. It is second only to the United States of America, according to Johns Hopkins University's dashboard. While it is second in terms of total cases, India stands at the third spot with respect to virus-related fatalities reported from across the globe.During an interaction on social media on Sunday, Union Health Minister Dr Harsh Vardhan said India is far from achieving herd immunity against Covid-19. He further urged everyone to continue to rigorously adhere to Covid-19 protocols and wear a mask.
