Kamal Haasan's Hey Ram completes 20 years of the release today. The film is a period drama set during the Partition of India and depicts Mahatma Gandhi's assassination by Nathuram Godse. Kamal Hassan not only acted in the film but also wrote and directed it.
Shah Rukh Khan had an extended cameo in Hey Ram. He played Amjad Ali Khan, a friend of Saket Ram (Kamal Haasan). But do you know what was Shah Rukh's remuneration for doing Hey Ram?

In a video, which is going viral on social media, Kamal Haasan can be seen talking about Shah Rukh and how he didn't charge anything for doing the role.

When Kamal Haasan, who was also one of the producers of Hey Ram, was left with no money after making the film, Shah Rukh Khan said that he would do the role for free. However, Haasan gave him a wristwatch as compensation.
Hey, Ram was released in Tamil and Hindi simultaneously. Shah Rukh Khan, however, acquired the remake rights of the 2000-released film. In an earlier interview with Mumbai Mirror, Kamal Haasan said, "I am glad that he got the Hindi rights of Hey Ram from Bharat bhai (co-producer Bharat Shah). He should have some memory of the film as he gave his friendship and service for it."Hey, Ram received critical acclaim and won many awards. The film bagged three National Awards that year. Atul Kulkarni won the Best Supporting Actor for the role of Shriram Abhayankar, while Sarika won the Best Costume Design Award and Manthra bagged the award in Best Special Effects category.
Hey Ram, released in 2000, attracted several controversies because it incorporated many contentious events from Indian histories, like the destruction of Babri Masjid, the Partition of India and the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi. Several political parties staged protests as they said the film projected Mahatma Gandhi in a negative light.
