Elon Musk says Twitter was feeding Rs 32000 lunch to each employee per day, gets fact checked

Elon Musk is changing a lot of things at Twitter. From letting go of 50 per cent of staff to charging for the blue tick and more, Musk has introduced a whole lot of changes at Twitter. Now, it is said that Musk will be charging for meals at Twitter which he said was offered free of cost till now. An ex-Twitter employee schooled him and said Musk is lying.

The billionaire claimed that the “estimated cost per lunch served in past 12 months is >$400”, which is around Rs 32,000. An ex-Twitter employee, Tracy Hawkins, who recently resigned because she didn’t want to work with Musk said the Twitter boss is lying. “This is a lie. I ran this program up until a week ago when I resigned because I didn’t want to work for @elonmusk,” she said.

Musk denied claims made by Hawkins and said what she is saying is “false” and “Twitter spends $13M/year on food service for SF HQ.”
The Twitter boss highlighted that serving lunch worth more than $400 million in 12 months and said it is “bizarre” since “almost no one came to the office”. Hawkins denied Musk’s claims again and said “for breakfast & lunch we spent $20-$25 a day per person. This enabled employees to work thru lunchtime & mtgs.”

Hawkins also said that “attendance was anything from 20-50 per cent in the offices”. To which Musk said that the “badge in records show peak occupancy was 25 per cent, average occupancy below 10 per cent.” Last week, Musk made work from home mandatory for Twitter employees, which is the same work ritual he follows at Tesla and SpaceX. Well, Hawkins isn't the only former Twitter employee speaking against Musk. Recently, some of the top Twitter executives quit.

It is reported that in his first email to employees, Elon Musk informed Twitter employees about how the economic environment in the US would impact the company. He also asked Twitter employees to work for 40 hours a week and he announced a permanent end to the remote work policy, which was introduced by Jack Dorsey during the COVID time. “The road ahead is arduous and will require intense work to succeed,” Musk’s email noted.
