Google Meet calls transcribe feature rolling out soon, but only for select users

Google has announced a new transcribe feature for Meet calls. With this feature, users will be able to transcribe the entire meeting audio into text and save it in Google Doc format. The transcribed document file will be saved in Google Drive for users for easy accessibility and end-to-end encryption. The tech giant announced the new feature in the recent Cloud Next 2022.
The Google Meet transcribe feature will come in handy for users to record meetings, and save important notes, and whenever someone wants to recall anything from a particular meeting.

The company will start to roll out the new transcribe feature for Google Meet worldwide on October 24. While the transcribe feature looks intriguing, it would not be accessible to everyone. According to a report by Android Central, Google will launch the new feature only for desktop and laptop users.

Notably, the transcribe feature will be turned on by default and "can be configured at the group, domain, or OU level". The feature will only be available for Google Workspace Business Standard, Business Plus, Enterprise Starter, Enterprise Standard, Enterprise Plus, Education Plus, and the Teaching and Learning Upgrade users.

So, Google users with personal accounts, amongst other Workspace users, will not be able to use the new feature. At least not any time soon.

It is also worth noticing that the transcribe feature will work only for English language speakers. So, if users speak in any other language, the feature is not able to transcribe the audio into text. The feature also cannot be used by individuals with personal accounts, students to transcribe their online classes or users who speak in different languages other than English.

Just like the recording option, during the Google Meet calls, all the attendees will get a notification if the transcription is enabled for the call. Google further states that the transcribed file from Google Meet can be further stored in the same "Meeting Recordings" folder of the Google Meet in Google Drive storage.

All the members of the meeting including hosts and transcript initiator will receive the link to the transcript in the email ID after the end of the meeting. Along with that, Google will also attach the link of transcription to the "associated calendar invite for the meeting".
