t seems that Apple is not planning to launch a folding iPhone anytime soon, but it has started working on an all-screen foldable MacBook from the company. Apple is said to be working on foldable notebooks that might have around 20-inch displays, according to Display Supply Chain Consultant (DSCC) analyst Ross Young. The company is reportedly in talks with its suppliers for the same.
The cited source suggests that Apple might be planning to add a new product category to its portfolio and this might be for foldable notebooks. The upcoming product could act as a laptop with an on-screen full-sized keyboard when folded. One will also be able to use it as a monitor when unfolded. Of course, you will require an external keyboard to use it for work.
Apple could also offer a 4K display or a higher resolution screen. Young says that the company is still working on this and that you will not get to see a foldable notebook from Apple anytime soon, as the analyst suggests that this will likely happen after 2025. People may get to see a foldable MacBook in 2026 or 2027.
Similarly, the Cupertino giant isn’t in a hurry to enter the foldable market for smartphones. This segment is currently ruled by Samsung, according to a report by Counterpoint. It asserted that even if several OEMS plan on entering the foldable market, Samsung would still have nearly 75 per cent of the market share. Currently, it has an 88 per cent market share. The firm also expects the foldable smartphone market to see 10x growth by 2023.
While Apple is taking its own sweet time to enter the foldable market, Asus already showed off its foldable laptop at this year’s CES 2022 tech show. The company unveiled the Asus Zenbook 17 Fold OLED, which one can fold into a compact form and carry in a small bag. The company claimed that it can be used as a tablet, a traditional laptop and in a book mode. While durability has been a concern for foldables, Asus claimed that its laptop can be unfolded ten times a day on an average and the hinge would still work fine for years.
At the same tech show, Samsung also introduced its 17-inch foldable Samsung Flex Note panel, but this was a concept model for laptops and was not ready to ship, unlike Asus’ Zenbook 17 Fold OLED. Samsung claimed that users will be able to use the bottom half of the screen as a keyboard, a media controller for editing videos, and a pen input pad for drawing something. The rest of the details are yet to be revealed about this tech. Having said that, the foldable market is still underdeveloped and users will have to wait for a few more years to experience this tech
