Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra will use a 200-megapixel camera, suggests a wild rumour

Samsung is yet to come out with its Galaxy S22 lineup but we might already have an important hint on what to expect from its Galaxy S23 phones. A speculation from a noted tipster suggests that Samsung may be gearing up to revolutionise the megapixel wars. It will do so by introducing a 200-megapixel sensor on its flagship phone for 2023 - the Galaxy S23 Ultra.

The hint was dropped by Ice Universe in a recent tweet. As per the tipster, Samsung is "considering carrying a 200MP sensor for the Galaxy S23 Ultra." This will be a significant jump from what we see on smartphones today. For reference, know that the Galaxy S21 Ultra, the current flagship phone from the house of Samsung, carries a 108-megapixel primary shooter on its quad-camera setup.

In the month to come, Samsung is anticipated to come out with its next range of flagship devices, meaning the Galaxy S22 series. The flagship phone in the series will be the Galaxy S22 Ultra and from what has been known about the device so far, Samsung may just employ a similar camera setup on the S22 Ultra as the one seen on the S21 Ultra. This will of course come with some enhancements over the previous model, but these improvements will not be focused on an increased megapixel count.

Other than this, we can expect some camera improvements on the lower models of the series too, including the Galaxy S22+ and the vanilla Galaxy S22.

In 2023, this equation may change for good. If what Ice Universe claims turns out to be true, Samsung will set a significantly high industry standard to match. As for the features that it will equip, the Galaxy S23 Ultra may be able to shoot video in 4K and 8K formats with a wide viewing angle, as noted by GizChina in a report.

Note that Samsung is already out with its ISOCELL HP1 sensor, the world's first 200-megapixel mobile camera sensor. The sensor contains pixels with a size of 0.64 µm, and in normal mode, produces images with a resolution of 50 megapixels. It even allows video 8K recording at 30 frames per second and 4K recording at 120 frames per second.

Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra already ranks among the best smartphone cameras in the market right now. Since it was launched at the beginning of the year. the subsequent phones from other makers have managed to grab its top spot on several rankings. Galaxy S22 Ultra will easily change that upon its launch scheduled for the end of January 2022. As for the Galaxy S23 Ultra, we will have to wait and see how it propels Samsung to a new level.
