WhatsApp rebrands itself to show it is an app owned by Meta, not Facebook

Facebook last week announced it is changing its name to Meta. Meta is more of a corporate rejig for the Mark Zuckerberg-led company to represent the new goals for a metaverse, and it will serve as the parent company for all apps by the company. Now, WhatsApp has changed its footer to show that it is now a Meta-owned app. Instead of “WhatsApp from Facebook”, it is now “WhatsApp from Meta.”

WABetaInfo has spotted the new version of WhatsApp beta reflects the latest changes to Facebook. The WhatsApp beta version 2.21.220.14 no longer mentions Facebook anywhere. It is Meta instead, but for users, nothing is going to change. That means you, as a WhatsApp user, do not have to worry much about the new “WhatsApp from Meta” footer inside your app’s Settings page.

“As part of this, it’s time for us to adopt a new company brand to encompass everything that we do. To reflect who we are and what we hope to build. I’m proud to announce our company is now Meta,” said Mark Zuckerberg, who is the CEO of Meta now.

The change comes about a year after WhatsApp started using Facebook’s name in the app to remind users that it is Facebook that owns the app.

However promotional that strategy may have been, it backfired for Facebook, which has had to deal with a myriad of controversies, including WhatsApp’s updated terms and conditions and privacy policy. Although the chat app has put implementing the new privacy policy as mandatory for users in India, privacy advocates are still wary. The latest revelations - made by at least two Facebook whistleblowers about how the company failed to curb misinformation, and how it pursued teenagers and kids despite knowing that its social media platforms are impacting them negatively - have only exacerbated the troubles.

According to WABetaInfo, the beta update also brings the ability to rate messages received from business accounts. This will allow customers to send their feedback to a business instantly, but through an anonymous system, just so businesses cannot see who rated them. WhatsApp also cannot read the content of the message, the report said.

Right now, only the beta version of WhatsApp for Android has been spotted with the two changes, while there is nothing available for the iOS version. Since the changes have made their way to the beta version, the stable builds are expected to get the new footer and the new message rating system for business accounts soon.
