Apple’s iPhone has many proprietary features that contribute to the seamless experience you get using it. However, over time, people have begun to ask for a few changes to that system, including how the iPhone is charged today. Apple uses its proprietary Lightning connectors on the iPhone for charging, while the call for a USB-C port instead has been there for quite some time. Now that might become real. A new report has said Apple is considering using a USB-C port on next year’s iPhone 14, especially the Pro models.
As reported by iDropNews, citing sources familiar with the development, iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max could come with USB-C ports for charging. If this turns out true, it could be one of the most important changes that will show Apple conceding to customers’ demands. A USB-C port would mean you would be able to use any standard charger that already charges nearly every Android phone and other gadgets. Those are practical advantages, but there are at least three reasons that the report said could actually be why Apple would prefer a USB-C port after all.
The first is the high transfer speeds that Apple would be able to provide for its iPhone customers. The Lightning connector has been around since 2021 and still uses the USB 2.0 technology, which can offer only so much speed for transferring files. With the iPhone becoming almost a film camera with the ProRes recording feature, it becomes even more crucial for the iPhone to give users higher transfer speeds. USB-C technology will allow the iPhone to do that because it uses the USB 4.0 with data transfer speeds of 20Gbps and 40Gbps.
The second reason is Apple’s exit strategy from all the legal trouble. Apple is seeing pressure from the US government and European Union to give customers a universal mode to charge their devices, largely to avoid contributing to e-waste. A non-complying company will be fined heavily and Apple would not want that. By introducing a USB-C port to just two iPhone models next year, Apple can plead its case that it has begun the transition to USB-C technology. While iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max will get USB-C, the report added the regular models may get it only in 2023. That means we may see USB-C ports on all models of the iPhone 15 series.
The third reason is more about saving the environment. Apple has time and again shown its commitment towards environmental protection. It removed the power brick from the iPhone box as one of its ways to reduce e-waste. Now, Apple knows it will eventually ditch the Lightning connector because it is going to become obsolete in comparison with other iPhone technologies. Switching to a universal charging technology is the way to go.
For what it is worth, it is good news for people demanding Apple to adopt the USB-C port, but I would suggest you take it with a pinch of salt as it is too early to go by it.
