WhatsApp has been repeatedly working on a feature that would enable chat history migration between iOS and Android. But now we hear that WhatsApp is not only considering a cross-platform migration but it might also allow users to transfer their chat history to another number. This is the most useful feature that WhatsApp is working on as whenever we change our number on WhatsApp, we lose our chat history. However, when the new feature is implemented, changing numbers would not be a problem.

The development was first reported by WhatsApp features tracker Wabetainfo. The report states that WhatsApp has been working on the migration of chat history.

“WhatsApp is finally working on a feature to transfer your WhatsApp chat history to a different platform in a future update for iOS and Android. This feature fixes the “issue” where a user couldn’t restore the chat history after buying a device that’s not on the same operating system. In fact, it’s not possible to restore your chat history from iCloud on WhatsApp for Android, and WhatsApp for iOS cannot restore the backup from Google Drive. WhatsApp is now working on a solution to migrate the chat history,” the report stated.

Wabetainfo has also shared a few screenshots of how the feature would look once it is rolled out. This shows that user will get an option in the Settings menu to migrate their chat history. In order to do so, users will have to first update their WhatsApp from the play store. The process looks quite simple and it would happen with a single tap. However, you can only start the process when linking a new Android phone to your WhatsApp account. Not just the chats, the media will also be migrated.

Along with this, WhatsApp is working on a feature to let users transfer their chat history to a different phone number.” This is very useful when you are changing device and phone number, so the process to change your phone number will be automatically launched before starting to migrate your chat history,” Wabetainfo read.

The WhatsApp features tracker revealed that the feature is currently under development, and it will be available in a future update. This is one of the many features that WhatsApp is reportedly working on. The messaging app is yet to roll out the multi-device support that would let users log in to the same account using different devices.
