Instagram and Facebook to automatically opt-out of tracking settings with iOS 14.5, reveals leaked memo

updates that started widely rolling out with iOS 14.5 for iPhone 6s and later models earlier this week. Soon after the announcement of the privacy changes, which requires companies to take consent from users for tracking them last year, Facebook released a blog post informing developers and advertisers how it would impact them and small business owners. After the wide rollout of iOS 14.5 Facebook has again informed its advertisers how the privacy update would impact them.

The memo notes that for users running iOS 14.5, both the Facebook and Instagram apps will automatically opt-out of tracking settings. Facebook’s revenue primarily depends on ads and advertisers could lose people as users will have the option to opt-out of being tracked.

The memo was sent to some advertisers on Wednesday explaining how App Tracking Transparency (ATT) will affect advertisements on Facebook and Instagram, according to an online report. The company says it expects ad campaign results will fluctuate gradually as users update their devices to iOS 14.5 in the coming weeks.

The memo, as seen by Business Insider and reported by 9to5 Mac notes that advertisers will lose the ability to target an advertisement with an estimated time frame to result in conversion when it comes to iOS users. The memo says 1-day click-through opt-out data will be modeled for advertisers, 7-day click-through and 1-day view-through attribution settings will no longer include iOS 14.5 opted-out events and 28-day click-through, 7-day view-through, 28-day view-through attribution tools will no longer be available to advertisers.

Facebook has also noted that it will not be possible to create things like Mobile App Install campaigns with iOS 14.5 users as the target audience, and the campaigns that currently active with iOS users as the target audience will no longer be displayed for those running iOS 14.5.

Apple has started rolling out the iOS 14.5 updates earlier this week. It is about 1.2GB in size though this may vary depending on the model. The update brings features that will let Apple Watch users unlock their iPhone while wearing a face mask. For iPhone X and later models, the update also adds the ability to unlock an iPhone with Apple Watch Series 3 and later when users attempt to use Face ID while wearing a face mask.
