WhatsApp privacy policy: Don't believe these rumors that are circulating on social media platforms

WhatsApp raked up a storm of late when it announced its updated privacy policy. The messaging app sent an in-app notification to users informing them about the new privacy policies. WhatsApp had laid out a condition that in order to continue using services the users will have to accept the new terms of service. This baffled most WhatsApp users as there was little clarity over what the new privacy policies mean and how much data will WhatsApp will share with Facebook.

WhatsApp today addressed some of the concerns of its users in a blog and assured them that it does not have access to the private chats of the users. “We recently updated our Privacy Policy, and we have received many thoughtful questions. With some of the rumors going around, we want to answer some of the common questions we have received. We go to great lengths to build WhatsApp in a way that helps people communicate privately. We want to be clear that the policy update does not affect the privacy of your messages with friends or family in any way. Instead, this update includes changes related to messaging a business on WhatsApp, which is optional, and provides further transparency about how we collect and use data,” WhatsApp said in the blog.

WhatsApp answered some of the commonly asked questions regarding the new privacy policy.

Can WhatsApp access my private chats?

Ever since the new privacy policies have been announced users have wanted to know whether WhatsApp can access their private conversations. So can WhatsApp really access our private chats?- The answer is no. WhatsApp has claimed that personal messages are protected by end-to-end encryption so nobody can access the chats. The Facebook-owned messaging app has said that it labels each chat so that users know about end-to-to end encryption.

Can WhatsApp track users' messaging or calling info?

Another common question that users want to know is whether WhatsApp is tracking users’ messaging or calling - WhatsApp has said that this information is only with mobile carriers and operators. “We believe that keeping these records for two billion users would be both a privacy and security risk and we don’t do it,” WhatsApp said in a blog.

Can Facebook access our contacts on WhatsApp?

WhatsApp has said that Facebook can only access contacts if the user gives the permission for the same.” When you give us permission, we access only the phone numbers from your address book to make messaging fast and reliable, and we don’t share your contacts lists with the other apps Facebook offers,” the blog said.

Are Group chats private?

As WhatsApp mentioned before that the chats are end-to-end encrypted so no one the receiver and senders have access to the conversations. “We use group membership to deliver messages and to protect our service from spam and abuse. We don’t share this data with Facebook for ad purposes. Again, these private chats are end-to-end encrypted so we can’t see their content,” WhatsApp said
