This will be the second phone from Xiaomi to be launched with the chipset as the company had earlier launched the Mi 11 as its first Snapdragon 888 SoC device at the end of December 2020. While the Mi 11 was launched as a premium offering, the Redmi K40 will be launched at an affordable price point. The launch of the phone was confirmed for February with the company also confirming some information about the upcoming smartphone.
The information was shared by Redmi's General Manager, Lu Weibing, who also confirmed the starting price of the Snapdragon 888-powered Redmi K40 Pro. He confirmed that the device will start retail for CNY 2,999 making it an extremely affordable phone for the specs it will pack.
In the past, leaks have claimed that the Redmi K40 will bring with itself a selfie camera housed inside a punch-hole at its upper-left corner. Previous leaks have also claimed that the K40 will flaunt an OLED panel with a slim punch-hole which could be 3.7mm in size. The battery backing the phone could reportedly be a 45000mAh pack.
For now, there's little else known about the Redmi K40. However, we expect more details about the device to emerge in the days to come. Especially, as the device is now confirmed and barely weeks away from a commercial launch.
But at this moment if we are to speculate, the Redmi K40 looks all set to be an upgrade over the Redmi K30 phones from last year. And this is not only for specs but also design. A hint at this are the leaked live images which have shown the rear-facing main camera setup of the Redmi K40 could sport a much broader enclosure on the top left-hand side of the phone. It appears the phone could also come with five cameras and also bring with itself a flash. Interestingly, the K40 could also come with the words “ultra-premium” etched in the camera bump to sort of enhance the premium messaging of the phone.
