After all the leaks, OnePlus has finally confirmed the launch of its first smartwatch for early next year. The information was confirmed by the company's CEO, Pete Lau, who revealed that OnePlus plans to launch its first smartwatch soon.
The information comes after Lau himself hinted in an interview last week that the company was working on a smartwatch. However, at the time he had not given a tentative timeline for launch of the device. While Lau still hasn't revealed a specific date, he does reveal the smartwatch will be released “early next year.” This can very well be a hint that OnePlus is looking to launch the new smartwatch alongside the OnePlus 9 devices which are also rumoured to be launched early next year.
Earlier, it was speculated that the watch could be launched this year only. However, tipster Max J speculated that the launch may have been delayed because of issues related to production or software development which may have caused severe delays for the new smartwatch.
As for the smartwatch, previous reports have suggested that the new device would borrow its design from the Vivo Watch which was launched in China earlier in September. Apart from this, little else is known about the device, including details about its internals, but there are suggestions that the new OnePlus Watch could come with a round face and a Snapdragon Wear 4100 SoC which would represent a major upgrade on the Snapdragon 2100 or 3100 in terms of performance and efficiency.
The watch is also expected to run Google's Wear OS, after OnePlus confirmed last week that it is working closely with Google to improve the platform. WHile there's no word on why, it looks likely that the partnership is to ensure that the Google Wear OS is ready for when OnePlus launches its first smartwatch.
The launch of the smartwatch will also be interesting as it would signal OnePlus' intent to expand its portfolio. The brand had earlier in the year launched new TWS earphones and even announced a budget range of phones in the form of the OnePlus Nord. This launch of the OnePlus Smartwatch would represent a further step in the ongoing attempts to expand its product portfolio.
