Sensex, Nifty close at record highs in special Muhurat trading session

Indian benchmark indices Sensex and Nifty registered record highs during the auspicious Muhurat trading session, which marks the beginning of the Samvat new year, on Saturday.
The S&P BSE Sensex jumped almost 390 points to touch an all-time high of 43,830.93 soon after opening at 43,815.45. The NSE Nifty 50 also climbed to a record 12,828.70 after adding over 108 points from its previous close.

It may be noted that the market closed on a positive note as Sensex closed at a new high of 43,637.98 while Nifty settled at 12,780.25. Both the benchmarks closed at record highs.
The customary trading session was held for an hour from 6:15 pm to 7:15 pm along with an eight-minute pre-opening session from 6 pm to 6.08 pm.

Some of the stocks that ended higher were Bharat Petroleum, Indian Oil, Tata Motors, HDFC Life and Sun Pharma. All of them closed higher and were top Nifty 50 gainers. On the other hand, some of the laggards were Hindalco, Hero MotorCrop, JSW Steel, SBI and Bajaj Finance.

The Nifty Banking Index performed decently, settling almost 0.50 per cent higher at closing. The overall market breadth remained positive with an advance-decline ratio of 3:1 as over 1,800 shares rose on the BSE, which is more than double the number of shares that fell.

Some of the recent measures announced by the government including the Atmanirbhar Bharat 3.0 stimulus package and solid earnings by companies have boosted the market over the past few days, helping the markets recover from the losses it had incurred due to the pandemic in March.
It is worth mentioning that in Samvat 2076, the period from Diwali 2019 to the eve of Diwali 2020, Sensex added over 4,300 points, while the Nifty gained over 1,100 points during the period.
