Priyanka Chopra celebrates 16 years of Aitraaz, says it taught her to play characters with conviction

Sixteen years ago today, Priyanka Chopra took Bollywood by storm by playing the antagonist in Aitraaz. The film also starred Kareena Kapoor Khan and Akshay Kumar. As Aitraaz completes sixteen years of release today, Priyanka, who played the role of Sonia Roy in the film, took to Instagram and penned a note. She also shared a video that featured clips from the film as well as of Priyanka, talking about her role in an interview.

PRIYANKA CHOPRA CELEBRATES 16 YEARS OF AITRAAZ

In the note, Priyanka Chopra begins by writing that she played the role of Sonia when she was just a year old into ‘being an actor’. Priyanka then added that it was the ‘boldest part she had taken on, which was a big risk at that time since she was new in the film business’. The note further reads, “I must admit I was scared as hell but the artist inside me was crying for a chance to do something interesting and Sonia was exactly that... wicked, predatory, complicated and self-serving for the most part, but also surprisingly vulnerable and emotional.

“I will forever be grateful to the dynamic director duo of Abbas-Mustan, not only for trusting such a relative newcomer like me for this role, but for also understanding my inhibitions and pushing me to deliver a performance to be proud of.

“Today, 16 years later, as I look back, Aitraaz was a game changer for me. It taught me to play my characters with conviction and not judgement.”

AITRAAZ: THE PLOT

Akshay Kumar plays the role of Raj Malhotra, having a 9-5 job at a mobile phone company. He falls in love with Priya (Kareena Kapoor Khan) and the two get married. Soon, the couple’s happy days come to an end when Raj’s boss, Sonia Roy, enters their life and demands a physical relationship with him.

Coming back to 2020, Priyanka Chopra will next be seen in The White Tiger. The film is an official adaptation of Aravind Adiga’s best-selling novel of the same name. The White Tiger also stars Adarsh Gourav and Rajkummar Rao.
