The White House is set to have a new occupant. Democrat Joe Biden defeated US President Donald Trump to become the 46th president of the United States on Saturday, positioning himself to lead a nation gripped by a historic pandemic and a confluence of economic and social turmoil.
Biden's victory came after four days of uncertainty as election officials sorted through a surge of mail-in votes that delayed the processing of some ballots. Biden crossed 270 Electoral College votes with a win in Pennsylvania.
Unwilling to accept the election results, Trump had threatened further legal action on ballot counting.
Biden, the 77-year-old Democrat, is the oldest man to win the presidency -- a position he twice sought unsuccessfully during his long political career, before being elected vice president to Barack Obama in 2008.
Meanwhile, Donald Trump, who is a favourite of netizens when it comes to memes and trolls, is back on the trending section after Biden has won the race for White House.During the counting of votes, when trend predicted Biden's victory, Trump had pointed to delays in processing the vote in some states to allege with no evidence that there was voter fraud and to argue that his rival was trying to seize power.
