The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has suspended the license of a private hospital in Mumbai for 30 days over allegations of overcharging patients. Family Care Hospital, Mahim, a designated Covid-19 hospital has been asked to stop new admissions with immediate effect and shift existing patients.

BMC's G-North Ward in its order dated July 30, cited a video on social media about the death of one patient and overcharging beyond the schedule charges as per government notification.

Kiran Dighavkar, Assistant Municipal Commissioner, G/North Ward issued the order for suspension of registration of the hospital for period of one month. Mahim Corporator Sheetal Gambhir said, “There were many complaints of overcharging against the hospital in the past. They were given a show-cause notice in the past as well. Despite this there was a complaint of overcharging.”

In a statement, Family Care Hospital denied any wrongdoing, saying that the suspension order was misleading and wrong. They added that hospital management was not given a chance to present their version.
“The allegations are about a first show-cause notice given on June 30 and a reminder for the same in the form of a second show-cause notice on July 3 for a patient whose bill was Rs. 14000 /-( approx). A reply to the same was given. The patient was admitted for two billable days and was charged only about Rs.14000 for the same. We never heard about it from the BMC after that," said the statement.

The hospital has also written to BMC for reconsideration of the suspension order, “A misleading statement by parties having vested interest has been shared on social media and the cognizance of the same has been taken by your good office without proper verification which is both demoralising for our healthcare team and to our reputation. We therefore kindly request you to please consider our justification/reply and present us an opportunity to place true and correct facts on records.”
