Why Kyaa Super Kool Hain Hum is not at all cool

Djonlinetach

Kyaa Kool Hain Hum released in 2005, the time when the trend of sex comedies was at its peak. Akshay Kumar and John Abraham's megahit Garam Masala released the same year. Before that, we saw Vivek Oberoi and Lara Dutta sizzle in On The Roof In The Rain in the 2004 film, Masti.

Twardy humour, distasteful gay jokes and an undependable astrologer, is how one can summarise the Tusshar Kapoor and Riteish Deshmukh-starrer Kyaa Kool Hain Hum. But, it's no surprise that the cringy sex comedy was a major hit at the box office, inciting producers Ekta Kapoor and Shobha Kapoor to build a franchise out of it.

Enter Kyaa Super Kool Hain Hum in 2012, because the first one didn't quite prove their point. Sachin Yardi, who had co-written the original film, continued with the off-putting humour of the first in the sequel. And this time, he directed it too.

The film was once again a potpourri of bawdy and politically incorrect jokes. It pains to pen the summary of Kyaa Super Kool Hain Hum here. We can only imagine how Sachin wrote the whole screenplay. The film sees
Tusshar Kapoor, a struggling actor, and Riteish Deshmukh, a struggling DJ, make a comeback.

Despite these two well-qualified men, if I may, their dog Suckru is the sole breadwinner of the house. He has a lot of 'heat' and our lead actors make a living from Suckru's ability to impregnate other dogs. Riteish calls him Vicky Donor with love. A caveat for fellow dog lovers, protect yourself and your pups from this film.

The two men find two girls, because how can they make a sex comedy without them, and try to woo them. Tusshar proposes to the girl of his dreams (played by Neha Sharma) right after two meetings. The only way Neha could push away this pushy guy is by telling him that she likes girls. And begins the whole mistreatment of gay characters. The
paragliding scene, where Riteish is flying with a gay character, is especially horrific.

The writers have given names to their characters like Mar-lo and Rose Mary Marlo, for the sake of some cheap laughs. They also bring in references from films like The Dirty Picture, Sholay, Dostana, Delhi Belly and more. Singham turns on his cool-quotient and becomes Chinghum. And Rohit Shetty even approves of this dreadful pun by making an appearance in the film! More than jokes, these references felt like a movie knowledge-test for the audience. Did we pass? We honestly don't care.
Like the original film, Kyaa Super Kool Hain Hum was also a hit. The film, which was made on a budget of around Rs 19 crore, minted over Rs 60 crore, resulting in Kyaa Kool Hain Hum 3 in 2016. Thankfully, the audience didn't approve of the third one. We can only hope that the bad performance of Kyaa Kool Hain Hum 3 will put a stop on this merciless franchise.
