Tamil Nadu: Auto driver dies in hospital after police brutality in custody, cops booked

Yet another case of alleged custodial torture has surfaced in Tamil Nadu. An auto driver died in a hospital 15 days after he was admitted there following alleged physical torture in police custody.

The kin of the deceased diver, identified as N Kumaresan, said he had been called for an inquiry regarding a land dispute case. They alleged police beat him up in custody.

After a day of undergoing inquiry, Kumaresan came back home and didn’t speak much.

Later, Kumaresan started vomiting blood and was taken to a hospital in Surandai. He was subsequently moved to Thirunelveli government hospital.

Doctors discovered that Kumaresan’s kidney and spleen were badly damaged. It was then he spoke about the alleged brutality by cops inside the police station he had been earlier called to over land dispute case.

He said he had been threatened by the cops, who wanted him not to speak to anybody about what happened inside the police station. They allegedly threatened to harm his father.

Relatives held a protest demanding justice late last evening post Kumaresan's death.

A case has been registered against two policemen, sub-inspector Chandrasekar and constable Kumar under section 174 (3) of IPC.
