OnePlus' Pete Lau confirms new affordable smartphone, will launch in India and Europe first

After weeks of leaks and rumours, OnePlus has now finally confirmed the existence of its upcoming mid-range phone. The company's CEO, Pete Lau, has openly discussed the series in a forum post, where he shed some light on the what we can expect from this new affordable phone

In the post, he said, "I’m very excited to announce that we are bringing the premium, flagship experience that you’ve come to expect from OnePlus to a new, more affordable smartphone product line. I know this is something many of you have been wanting for a long time."

While he stopped shy of revealing any information about the specifications of the device, he did promise that this device will bring really solid performance at an accessible price.

"Never Settle has always been at the core of OnePlus. For more than 6 years, that has meant working hard to always deliver the best experience for flagship smartphone users. However, as we’ve grown together with our community, we know that there are many people who want a really solid smartphone that meets their everyday needs, and for a more accessible price."

The post also does not confirm the name of the phone, however, it does confirm that the affordable device will first come to India and Europe, with the company also keen on bringing it to North America in the future.

Apart from this, there is nothing the post reveals about the device. However, a Geekbench listing in the past claims to have revealed key details about the device's specifications. The listing hinted at OnePlus going with the Snapdragon 765G SoC, instead of a MediaTek SoC for the device. This could be paired with OxygenOS 10 operating system based on Android 10.

The display on the phone is tipped to be AMOLED in nature, with a screen size of 6.4-6.5 inches running at a refresh rate of 90 Hz. Under the hood, the phone is expected to be made available two variants, with either 8GB or 12 GB of RAM and storage of 128GB or 256 GB. Keeping the lights on could be a 4000 mAh rechargeable battery with support for fast 30-watt recharge via the USB Type-C port. The phone is also expected to come equipped with a quad-camera set-up.
