The fate of the iPhone 12 series is teetering between on track and getting pushed back for its launch. While some reports have suggested Apple will debut its iPhone 12 series on time, others have rebutted the claim to say the launch of 2020 iPhone models could be delayed. A fresh report by The Wall Street Journal, citing people familiar with the development, has stated Apple is pushing back the production of iPhone 12 series models by one month. The covid-19 pandemic has disrupted the production and supply chain of Apple's 2020 iPhone handsets, per the report.
Given the production is reportedly getting delayed, Apple could schedule the launch of the 2020 iPhone models for October, a month later than the usual timeline. Apple usually launches its new premium-level iPhone models and other devices in September while the shipping starts one or two weeks later. A large inventory of the new iPhone models is crucial for Apple to begin shipping on time, the production of which usually starts in summer.
In the report, WSJ has, however, said that the delay in production is unlikely to impact the launch of the iPhone 12. Apple could choose to announce the 2020 iPhone models in September. But the delay in mass production of iPhone 12 series models would mean a shortage in the units this year. The WSJ has estimated the production from July until the end of the year would drop by 20 percent. The production rate for the iPhone 12 series is not known.
The latest claim comes days after the renowned analyst Ming-Chi Kuo predicted a delay of one month for the production of the iPhone 12 series, owing to the disturbances caused by the coronavirus pandemic. Apple is poised to launch three iPhone models, a 5.4-inch iPhone 12, a 6.1-inch iPhone 12 Pro, and a 6.7-inch iPhone 12 Pro Max. Kuo estimated the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro could enter mass production in September while the production of the "most complicated model" iPhone 12 Pro Max is likely to begin in October.
Moreover, the manufacturing facilities, including those of Foxconn, have reportedly resumed operations in China. Previously, Foxconn had given reassurances that the lost time will be compensated for with increased production. But multiple reports have pointed out the otherwise, saying the production delays are inevitable in the light of the current situation across the world.
For Apple, delays in shipments is not new. It has previously delayed the release of many iPhone models to meet the demands. The iPhone X was announced alongside the iPhone 8 series in September 2017 but its shipping started only in November. The release of iPhone SE 2020 into markets is too said to be delayed until May, owing to the adverse circumstances caused by the coronavirus pandemic
