Be social not unsocial: Mamata Banerjee says BJP playing politics over coronavirus pandemic

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday advised Bharatiya Janata Party to be 'social instead of exhibiting anti-social or unsocial behavior by trying to malign the state's image'.

Addressing the media over Covid-19 situation and restrictions in West Bengal, Mamata Banerjee took on the BJP as she claimed the saffron party was spreading "fake news" and "amplifying" a recent mob attack on police personnel in the red-zone Howrah district.

Two policemen were injured after a mob attacked a police party that was enforcing the lockdown to prevent the spread of coronavirus at Tikiapara in Howrah district, a 'red zone' on Tuesday.

Mamata Banerjee came down heavily on the political opponent BJP for highlighting the incident.

"BJP is amplifying one small incident in Howrah. They are sitting idle just to malign Bengal across India. An incident took place in Howrah, it should not have happened. It's was wrong. But we don't discriminate a crime based on religion," Mamata Banerjee said.

The Trinamool chief also warned journalists to behave "properly", accusing many of them of falling for "BJP propaganda" during the coronavirus outbreak.

Banerjee said her government could take action against journalists, but chose not to.

The West Bengal CM further went on to accuse the BJP-led UP government of police access during anti-CAA protests a few months ago.

"What did they do when cops were targetted in UP? Even we can open Pandora's box.
How many people have died during CAA protests in Delhi?" Mamata Banerjee asked while terming BJP as 'carrier of negativity and destruction virus'.
