PMC bank scam: Key accused Rakesh Wadhawan hospitalised, applies for bail


HDIL chairman Rakesh Wadhawan, a key accused in the Punjab and Maharashtra Co-operative Bank scam has been admitted at JJ Hospital in Mumbai.
He is currently undergoing treatment in the hospital's medical intensive care unit (MICU) after complaining of severe chest pain on Thursday. Wadhawan was admitted after he reportedly suffered a cardiac arrest.
Dr. Pallavi Saple, JJ hospital Dean, said, "Wadhawan has been admitted at the MICU and his vitals are stable now. He is not critical."
Following his hospitalization, Wadhawan's legal counsel applied for bail at the session's court in Mumbai.
Court has heard the application today and called for a detailed report from the JJ hospital on Saturday.
Lawyers appearing for Wadhawan have appealed court that he should be shifted to a private hospital and that his bail application should be approved on medical grounds.
Last month, the Wadhawans were close to being placed under house arrest with permission to only move around in Mumbai.
The Bombay HC bench, hearing the PIL related to the PMC bank scam on January 15, ordered a committee to be set up under a retired judge along with two other persons. They also ordered in favor of shifting promoters of HDIL to their residence under the supervision of jail guards to help the committee sell the encumbered assets of HDIL.
The two agencies investigating the case, Mumbai Police's EOW and Enforcement Directorate (ED) were shocked by the order.
Rakesh Wadhawan and Sarang Wadhawan, promoters of HDIL, are prime accused in the PMC bank scam which has led to the exposure of around Rs 6,800 crore to PMC bank.
PMC account holders in eight states of the country have been suffering since the bank was left cash-strapped after RBI placed restrictions on it following the revelation after the scam came to light on September 23 last year.
