Mumbai On Rain Red Alert For Next 24 Hours, Trains, Flights Delayed

Heavy overnight rain caused water-logging in several parts of Mumbai, triggering air and rail traffic disruptions today. The civic authorities have declared a holiday in schools in the city amid a heavy rain warning. Rescue teams are at work in areas near Mithi River, which has crossed the danger mark.
A red alert - likelihood of heavy to extremely heavy rain - has been sounded by the weather office in Mumbai for the next 24 hours. Out of the 150 weather stations in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), around 100 recorded over 200 mm rainfall in last 24 hours, the India Meteorological Department said. The city, home to country's financial markets, has received above average rainfall in September, according to KS Hosalikar, Deputy Director General of Meteorology, IMD, Mumbai.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation tweeted this morning: "In wake of IMD's warning of heavy rainfall for the rest of the day too, the schools shall remain closed today. The Principals of the schools where students are already in, are requested to take all precautions and ensure that the children are sent back home carefully and safely (sic)".
In a series of posts, the civic body advised locals to avoid "venturing near the sea" and "stay indoors in safe premises till the water in low-lying areas recedes".
Residents around the Mithi River have been evacuated temporarily to a safer BMC shelter, the civic body said. Rescue teams are deployed in the area to help the locals.

Yuva Sena chief Aaditya Thackeray, in a tweet, said the city has witnessed the "heaviest rainfall so far, with the total rainfall mark exceeding the whole of September in just about 30 hours".
Heavy rain also disrupted rail traffic, the Central Railways said. Water-logging on train tracks led to cancellations.
In a tweet, Western Railways said: "In view of cancellation of trains due to heavy water logging on tracks at Nallasopara - Virar, Refund Counters have been opened at all reservation offices."
Visuals showed how heavy downpour affected normal life in the city, with locals moving in the waterlogged streets in waist-deep water.
At the Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport, no major air traffic disruptions were reported; however, flights were delayed. "Operations are so far normal with minor delays of 10-15 minutes," an airport official said this morning.

Due to heavy showers and water logging, traffic movement was slowed down in several parts of the city, including Ghatkopar, Sakinara Junction, Chembur and Dadar. "Please take adequate precautions and ensure safety #Dial100 in case of an emergency (sic)," the Mumbai Police tweeted.
The downpour is likely to affect the 12-day Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations in the city, which began yesterday.
